Domesday Reloaded
I stumbled across the BBC stand promoting the Domesday Reloaded project this lunchtime. The original Domesday was launched by the BBC in 1986, with the ambitious aim to record a snapshot of everyday life across the UK for future generations. A million volunteers took part, submitting nearly 150,000 pages of articles and over 23,000 photos.
The project used cutting edge technology of the day, and the data was eventually presented on a special type of Laser-Disc, read by a BBC master computer and navigated using an innovative tracker-ball pointing system. I don't know about you but my last laptop didn't come with a Laser-Disc reader, but thankfully it's been transfered and catalogued on something called the 'internet'. So, you can search the archive online and see the pictures from 25 years ago. And more importantly you can update the information and make your mark on this fascinating record of our collective history.
