The Dark Wheel
31/03/2011
The Dark Wheel is a 1984 novella set in the Elite computer game universe and distributed with the original boxed game for most 8 and 16 bit versions. It was written by noted fantasy writer Robert Holdstock, and was the first novella to be included for distribution with a computer game.
The Dark Wheel expands upon the universe Robert Holdstock outlines in the Elite manual and introduces many new concepts. The story tells of a young pilot, Alex Ryder, whose father Jason is killed when their merchant ship is attacked by pirates. I could explain more, but I don't want to give any spoilers.
Ian Bell's Elite website contains the full text of the novella.
