Possessions belonging to late, great James Brown - including iconic stage capes and jumpsuits - have raised $800,000 (£400,000) at under the hammer.

Christie's expected the sale to generate about $1m for the late singer's estate. Legal wrangling between his many heirs has ensured that the icon has remained as controversial in death, as he was in life.

The most expensive item proved to be a black cape embroidered in metallic thread with the words "James Brown", which fetched $47,500 - more than double its estimate.
